In addition to positively affecting the endocannabinoid system, CBD has been the focus of more than 23,000 published studies about cannabinoids in relation to various medical indications including anxiety, epilepsy, inflammation, cancer and chronic pain to name few. For a more comprehensive look at these and other studies, visit our medical research and education page.
Classed as phytocannabinoids (as opposed to endocannabinoids and cannabinoids that are manufactured artificially), both CBD and THC interact with specific cells in our brain (but also in other organs).

There are several good reasons to choose CBD over Cannabis oil and how it is made to alleviate health conditions, but none is more important than the legality. While the issue of marijuana recreational law, marijuana, and even cannabis therapeutic substances is in flux in the U.S., there are some key points to understand.
The human body contains a special system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, bread and immune system response (3).

CBD has also been shown to have neuroprotective properties in cell cultures as well as in animal models of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, xii, xi, xstrokes, xv glutamate toxicity, xvi multiple sclerosis (MS), xs Parkinson’s disease, xviii and neurodegeneration caused by alcohol abuse.xx Nabiximols (trade name Sativex), which contains THC and CBD in roughly equal proportions, has been approved throughout most of Europe and in a number of other countries for the treatment of spasticity associated with MS. It has not been approved in the United States, but clinical trials are ongoing, and two recent studies have reported that they have reduced the severity of spasticity in MS patients.xx, xxi There have been limited clinical trials to assess the potential efficacy of CBD for the other indications highlighted; However, a recent double-blind trial trial in patients with Parkinson’s disease found the CBD improved quality-of-life scores.xxii
In 2006 research found that CBD treatment significantly reduced the incidence of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice from an incidence of 86 percent in non-treated mice to an incidence of 30 percent in CBD-treated mice. CBD benefits also showed significant reduction in plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In histological examination of the pancreatic islets of the CBD-treated mice revealed significantly reduced insulitis. (16)

Found in all mammals, the endocannabinoid system is found in all mammals, and is made up of millions of cannabinoid receptors sites mainly in the brain and central nervous system (CB1 receptors) and the immune system (CB2 receptors) that act in neural communication. However, the endocannabinoid system does not simply rely on plant-based cannabinoids, or phytocannabinoids. The human body is capable of making its own cannabinoids. Similar in function to CBD, Anandamide and 2-AG are the body’s own endocannabinoids, created to control communication between cells, mediating your body’s functions.
Concern about the dangers of marijuana abuse led to the banning of cannabinoids for medicinal use in the United States and many other countries in the 1930s and 1940s. It took decades until they came to be considered again as compounds of therapeutic value, and even now their uses are very restricted.

In 1937, the U.S. The Treasury Department introduced the Marihuana Tax Act, which issued a levy of $ 1 per annum for medicinal use of cannabis and $ 100 per ounce for recreational use. This was opposed by doctors who were not required to pay a special tax for prescribing cannabis, to use special order forms to obtain it and keep records of its professional use. The American Medical Association believed that the evidence of cannabis’ harmful effects was limited and the act would prevent further research into its medicinal value.

Under the Compassionate Use Investigational New Drug Program, established in 1978, cannabis distribution was distributed to patients at a case-by-case basis, but this program ended in 1992. Now (see below), it’s legal to get for medical use in 25 states as well as the District of Columbia.

One important thing to clarify is that CBD can be found either in Cannabis plants or hemp. Hemp and marijuana fall under the same genus, Cannabis. So marijuana CBD oil refers to either Cannabis Sativa or Indica plants that are cultivated and grown to produce resinous trichomes. These trichos contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, so these plants are bred for their psychoactive qualities.

Cannabis has been cultivated by human, for a variety of purposes, since antiquity. So it is not surprising that there are several different species and even different varieties within the species, depending on the purpose of the plants were bred for. Through artificial selection, different species of cannabis have different properties-have been used for medicinal purposes, others as food, and others to create clothes, ropes, and other items.
Cannabis sativa is the most common strain of cannabis. It has been cultivated throughout history for a number of purposes, including the production of seed oil, food, hemp fiber (for clothing and rope), medicine, and even recreation.
Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD. Cannabidiol has shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder and researchers suggest that it may also be effective for panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recent research posted to Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation found that CBD may facilitate inflammation in the pancreas in type 1 diabetes. This may be the first step in finding CBD-based treatment for type 1 diabetes.

For example, CB1 receptors send signals that regulate senses, while cannabinoids that interact with CB2 receptors can at the same time affect gastrointestinal response and peripheral nervous system sensitivity.
, cannabis oil can help patients with eating disorders or be a natural way to treat obesity. This manipulation of the cannabinoid system is becoming popular, and more research is being done to determine its efficacy for patients with weight loss.

Cannabidiol is one of the most exciting cannabinoids that we are aware of today, and its use is growing worldwide. Cannabinoids are the natural compounds found in cannabis that are responsible for the myriad of effects that cannabis provides to users.
Cannabis originated in Central Asia, but today it’s grown worldwide. In the United States, it’s a controlled substance and is classified as a Schedule I agent, which means that it’s a drug with increased potential for abuse. The cannabis plant produces resin-containing psychoactive compounds called cannabinoids.

In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Although research in this area is still relatively new, several studies have shown promising results.
In 2014, for the first time, the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham conducted a study suggesting that cannabinoids affect blood vessels by causing them to relax and widen. By relaxing blood vessels, cannabis presents a natural way to lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Because this is the first human study evaluating the effectiveness of cannabis in treating conditions of the heart, there is still more research to be done to prove that this is a safe method of treatment.
Although research is limited at this time, CBD has been shown to effectively treat symptoms related to epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. CBD was also shown to reduce the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in test-tube and animal studies.
