Hey Y’all, this is Emily with Jan’s Garden
at the North Texas Food Bank.
Today we’re going to talk a little bit about
doing a Germination Test on your seeds.
It’s coming to be that time of year where
you are starting to pull out your seeds and decide:
“What do I want to plant this year?”
Seeds are only good for about
three to four years generally.
It depends on the fruit or vegetable seed that you have.
So, you are going to want to make sure you check the packaging on that
to see how many years it’s actually going to be good for.
Today I am just going to show you a quick, simple test
on what to do to show you about the percentage of
seeds that will germinate that’s in your package.
And, just so we are all on the same page,
When I say ‘Germinate,’
I just mean how many seeds are actually going to sprout and grow into a plant.
To make the math for this Germination test easier,
it’s best to use 10 seeds to be able to
calculate the percentage of how many seeds in your bag
will Germinate for this season.
So, here I have 10 Kale Seeds.
You can pick whatever kind of seeds you would like,
and count it out to 10.
So here I have 10 kale seeds,
and we’re going to wet the paper towel and
put it in a bag.
So after you count out your 10 seeds,
the next step is to wet a paper towel.
Now, you want the paper towel to be moist,
but you don’t want there to be standing water
when you put it in the bag.
This is going to create an environment for
your 10 seeds to germinate.
So I am just going to kind of
ring out my paper towel just a little bit,
cause I got it a little bit too wet over here on this side.
And if you need to, you can just feel free to
squeeze some of that extra water out.
It doesn’t require a whole lot of water.
So now that we have counted out our 10 seeds and moistened our paper towel,
you just need to lay your seeds on the paper towel,
and then fold it up.
Okay, and you’re going to stick it in the baggie.
And, make sure your paper towel is a good size that will
fit inside your baggie.
And, your seeds should germinate in about 3-10 days.
Another way you can do this as well,
instead of folding over your seeds,
you can just wet one piece of paper towel,
lay your seeds on top of it, and flip it over
to where the seeds are on the bottom.
That way they can germinate that way as well.
You just need to check your paper towel just
every couple days or so to make sure that it’s moist,
and keep this in a fairly warm environment.
That’s all you need to do!
I hope you found this video super simple in how to
figure out how many of your seeds will germinate.
But we will see you next time here at Jan’s Garden
where we’re growing good times!
